  • A girl known as “The Kid” discovers a vintage pulp magazine in her attic, and becomes enthralled by its sensational tales: Deep in the jungle, the devious Beetle Queen purloins the fabled Onyx Gem of Zavvenu from its guardian, Jesai of the Jaguars, and leaves Jesai to the mercy of a hideous volcanic demon.  Meanwhile, on the Moon, the intergalactic cowgirl Clare de Lune is providing security for world-famous composer Robert von Hesslington when they are ambushed by the lunar bandit Penny Dreadful.  Penny kidnaps Robert and chains Clare to a magnetic railway – directly in the path of an oncoming train!  And finally, the dastardly Professor Z lures brilliant scientist Doc Danger to his underground lair, shackling her in place and slowly administering a deadly virus intravenously.  He pilfers Doc Danger’s blueprints for an elaborate piece of machinery and leaves her to die a grueling death.  But the Doc’s superhuman strength – acquired by taking a chemical pill she concocted in her youth – renders the restraints useless, as she easily breaks free of her chains and rushes to retrieve the stolen blueprints.

In the jungle, as Jesai is about to be consumed by the demon, she is saved by an enigmatic detective named The Lady in Black, who explains that the blueprints, composer, and gemstone are part of a sinister plot known as “Project: Uncreate”.  The two join forces to recover the gemstone and thwart the evil plot.  Back on the Moon, Clare is rescued (and not a moment too soon!) by her partner Satellite Sally, and the cowgirls trace Robert’s whereabouts to an elaborate moon base.  They decide to split up, with Clare creating a distraction by dueling with Penny while Sally looks for Robert.  But just as Clare is about to win the duel, she is zapped unconscious by a robot belonging to none other than Professor Z!

  • While Satellite Sally was searching for kidnapped composer Robert von Hesslington, her partner Clare de Lune was abducted and detained in the laboratory of Professor Z’s moon base. Sally tracks down Robert, who explains that Professor Z is forcing him to compose a piece of music that could de-stabilize the universe!  Suddenly, the Beetle Queen bursts in with the robot
MC-7, who zaps Sally unconscious and takes her to the base’s lab for the next phase of “Project: Uncreate”.

Meanwhile, the Kid has gone from mere reader to full-blown character and joins Doc Danger in her subterranean hideaway.  The Doc explains that the stolen blueprints detail a machine called a Matter Phase Modulator, designed to tap into esoteric energies.  Just then, the Lady in Black and Jesai of the Jaguars arrive to enlist Danger’s help.  The Lady has had a premonition: Professor Z and his cohorts intend to use the modulation device to harness the Gem of Zavvenu’s magical properties. The Doc, Jesai, and Lady pile into Danger’s interplanetary space vehicle and blast off to confront Professor Z,
    the Kid in tow.

On the moon, the Beetle Queen puts the finishing touch - the Gem of Zavvenu - on the now complete Modulator.  Our heroes arrive, but are quickly subdued by MC-7 and taken to the laboratory, where they - alongside Sally and Clare - are shackled in electric collars which force them to sing Robert’s space-destabilizing composition!   Professor Z then reveals his dastardly designs: harness the Gem’s magic to project the music throughout the cosmos, destroying the universe in the process!
But luckily for the Danger Squad, the Kid has one last trick up her sleeve.

  • When we last left our heroes, Professor Z was on the brink of harnessing the power of the Gem of Zavvenu to re-order the universe!  But luckily for the Squad, the Kid snatched the gem at the very last second and hid it in her hat.

Back in the “real world”, the Kid revisits Breathtaking Tales, but something isn’t quite right:  while she previously had no trouble imagining the magazine’s fantastic scenes, she now has great difficulty picturing them.  Her reverie is interrupted by her Mom and Aunt Dawn, who chide her about reading a magazine they consider “trash”.  The Kid notices a striking physical resemblance between Doc Danger and Dawn, but is struck by a glaring personality contrast: whereas the Doc is courageous and independent, Dawn is wrapped up in her relationship to the exclusion of all else.  The same goes for her sister, Libby, who possesses the intelligence of the Lady in Black, but slings her words with much less care.

Mom brings the Kid to ad agency Channel Z for Bring your Daughter to Work Day, where the observations continue: Mom’s supervisor, Sal, is as confident and capable as Satellite Sally, but caves under the slightest pressure from the head of the agency, Mr. Zachary; and unlike Jesai of the Jaguars, Mom’s co-worker Jessie never misses an opportunity to stab a friend in the back.  The Kid is perplexed by these contradictions, but when the agency’s jingle writer, Bob, makes an offhand comment about Channel Z’s revenue stream (Z + revenue= Zavvenu!), she puts it all together: Professor Z is inhabiting the real world in the guise of Mr. Zachary, somehow continuing to harness the power of the matter phase modulator to make everyone’s lives boring!

  • When we last left our heroes, the Kid realized that Mr. Zachary was in reality Professor Z, bent on using the power of the gem to make the world boring!  Meanwhile, Libby challenges Mom over her banning the Kid from reading Breathtaking Tales, reminding her that one person’s trash may be another’s treasure.  As Mom makes dinner, the Kid arrives with the Gem of Zavvenu and uses its power to give Libby her memories back!  Reassuming her previous form as the Lady in Black, Libby and the Kid track down the rest of the Danger Squad – Dawn, Sal, Jessie, and Bob – and use the gem’s power to remind them who they really are: Doc Danger, Satellite Sally, Jesai of the Jaguars, and Robert von Hesslington.  The sole exception is Clare de Lune (aka Clara Leonard), whom the Beetle Queen has forced into servitude on the her tropical island.

The Squad tracks down the Matter Phase Modulator to the Channel Z ad agency’s off-limits Level 13, where Sally and Robert reprogram it to return reality to the way it was before it was made boring.  When the villains arrive, our heroes are ready, and subdue them with the aid of Satellite Sally’s hog-tying skills!  But Professor Z has one final trick up his sleeve: his beloved robot MC-7 arrives, detains the Squad, and frees Z from his restraints.  The tables turned, the Professor double-crosses Penny and the Beetle Queen, and recalibrates the Modulator to create a reality where he alone rules. But just when all seems lost, Clara appears out of nowhere and socks the Professor in the face, knocking him out cold!  With Professor Z laid low once and for all, Doc Danger places the Gem of Zavvenu in the Modulator and returns everyone to their colorful, complicated, more authentic selves.
