Milwaukee Opera Theatre’s Script & Score, in conjunction with Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra’s ACE program, is a full service program in which sixth graders at Milwaukee Parkside School for the Arts write and produce their own original operas. The project is completed in conjunction with the sixth grader’s social studies curriculum. Past operas have revolved around Medieval, Roman, Egyptian, and Ancient Greek themes.
Nathan Wesselowski, the creative artist representing Milwaukee Opera Theatre and Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra, works directly with students, helping them compose their melodies and arrange their creative ideas. Each year, the students are given a copy of their score to keep. Once the score is created, Nathan works in the classroom with all of the students, music-directing and teaching.

This project provides the students with an opportunity to learn how to read music along with their writing. They get to see the songs they create come to life in the form of musical notes on a page. The students learn how to read dynamic markings, tempo markings, performance markings, time signatures, key signatures, and basic rhythmic and melodic notation. The application of this process helps to reinforce the education provided by MOT and MSO, and the benefits received by the students are numerous. The classroom teachers, Sara Feider and David Kellogg, have seen countless students grow creatively and intellectually through their experiences with Script & Score, a unique, all-encompassing, process-based project.
